Since online blackjack is the most popular game in
the casinos across the world so the same is sometimes
known as king of all the games. However, it may be noted
that this is the game where most of the research is done
since it is very popular and very simple to play. The game
is complex also because of the fact that there is large
variation in terms of probabilities of different sets of
cards in different hands at different times. So the
chances of winning coincides and changes with the change
in composition of deck.
If the players follow certain set of rules in the game of
blackjack, we can reduce the house edge to something
around one percent. These rules are sometimes called as
“Basic Strategy”. And certainly due to these set of rules
that the game of online blackjack is regarded as
one of the most fair games around the world.
Basic Strategy
Therefore the first tip with regard to a strategy in
blackjack pertains to learning this ‘Basic Strategy’. A
new player must learn this before getting into a real game
of blackjack. Basic Strategy is a mathematically precise
formula that is an indicator of the best decision, be it a
hit, stand, double, split or surrender which the player
makes in a given situation.
It is easier to learn basic strategy by following
color-coded charts. Such charts are available in books as
well as for free online. The charts are focused around the
main actions that can be taken by a player. So there are
charts for split pairs, for double down and there are hit
or stand charts. In almost all charts, the action is
colored red and this is the key to learning the basic
strategy.
Intermediate Strategy
Having mastered the basic strategy, the player can adopt
the ‘wagering’ or ‘money management’ strategy. Among all
the different wagering schemes, the one’s that minimize
losses are ‘The consistent-wager system’, The Margingale
System, Labouchere and Oscar’s Grind. However, players
just initiated into the game must remember that they must
master the basic strategy first because the intermediate
strategies can be effective only if players can count on
winning and losing an equal number of hands. Without
perfecting your basic strategy if you get into memorizing
how to play each hand in each specific situation, in an
attempt to implement an intermediate strategy, you will
only maximize losses.
Advanced Strategy
Advanced strategies in Blackjack, include: card counting,
clump reading and shuffle tracking. These enable a player
to even the odds at casino blackjack. Card counting is
often discouraged but is totally legitimate and can
dramatically influence a player’s winnings. In card
counting, the player keeps track of the cards dealt. A
card counter can predict when the odds are in his favor.
Another method is clump reading. The decks have a great
degree of clumpiness at the start of the game. This is
because it is difficult to shuffle the new card decks very
greatly for randomness in just a brief minute or so. Hence
long spells of like cards get dealt after the initial
shuffle. This clumpiness decreases after several shuffles
are made. The strategy is to get a seat next to the
dealer’s left hand side. If the player can track the
streak of cards (count the highs and lows) he can make
changes to the basic strategy. Then he should try to get
into the last position that is next to the dealer's right
hand so as to be able to see all the other player’s cards.
Blackjack is a game which requires a certain degree of
self-education. It is relatively easy for beginners to
learn the basic game strategy by employing the color coded
charts. Unlike many other casino games, mastery of these
basic strategies can go a very long way to improving one’s
odds, whereas intermediate and advanced techniques provide
only marginally better results.
Basic Rules of Blackjack
The object of Blackjack is very simple: to achieve a total
that is greater than that of the dealer, and which does
not exceed 21. Even if other players are present at the
table, the dealer is your only opponent in the game.
There are relatively few decisions to make when playing
Blackjack. You must consider your cards and your dealer's
card and remember, if you go over 21, you "bust", and if
you "bust" you lose.
Play progresses as follows:
A card is dealt, face up, to each player in turn and then
one to the dealer. The dealer's card is face down and
called the "hole" card.
A second card is then dealt, again face up, to each
player.
Starting from the player to the left of the dealer, each
player decides whether to draw further cards.
After all players have completed their hands, the Dealer
proceeds to draw cards to complete the Dealer's hand.
You win if:
Your total is higher than the Dealer's total
The Dealer goes over 21 or "busts".
If your total is the same as the Dealer's total it is a
"stand-off" and you neither win nor lose.
If you go over 21, or the Dealer's total is greater, you
lose.
The Values of the Cards
Cards in Blackjack are assigned the following point valies:
Picture Cards (Jack, Queen and King) each count as 10
points.
An Ace counts as 1 point or 11 points, whichever is better
for owner of the hand.
All other cards have their numerical face value.
Jokers are not used when playing Blackjack. (More on Card
Values)
What is a Blackjack?
Blackjack is a combination of an Ace and any 10 or picture
card with your first two cards. It pays one and a half
times your bet unless the dealer also draws Blackjack, in
which case you have a "stand-off". (More on Blackjack)
Restrictions on the Dealer
The dealer plays according to a strict set of rules.
Dealers must take another card if their hand totals 16 or
less. Dealers must stand (not take any more cards) if
their hand totals 17 or more.
Splitting
If your first two cards are of equal value you may split
these to form up to three separate hands. Aces may be
split to form only two hands. You will receive an
additional card for each hand, however a wager equal to
your original bet must be placed each time you split.
Casino rules vary concerning splitting hands, so check
with your dealer first. (More on Splitting Pairs)
Doubling Down
You may place an additional bet (not exceeding your
original bet) if your first two cards total 9,10 or 11
(without aces). You will be dealt one additional card when
you double.
Again, rules may vary at some casinos, so be sure to ask
your dealer.
Insurance
If the first card dealt to the dealer is an ace, the
dealer will announce "Insurance". You may then place an
insurance bet of no more than half your original bet, to
insure your hand should the dealer make Blackjack.
